“You’ll either master your ego, or it will master you.”
Let’s have a hard conversation. We all have egos. We’re human. It’s why we compare ourselves to others. It’s why we get offended when people don’t give us positive feedback. It’s our sense of self esteem and self worth. While having an ego can help us challenge ourselves and push us into situations that make us uncomfortable, it is often deployed during fear and scarcity.
Let’s chat through 5 ways you can remove ego from your marketing.
- You make it 95% about them and 5% about you.
- Customer’s Journey – their journey matters. How they feel during their experience with you matters.
- Learning More About Your Customer – what do you know about them? Do you know their problems and fears?
- Be Clear In Your Approach – Cut the Fluff + Solve their problems
2. Give a Lot – Expect Little
- Do you reward your customers for their loyalty?
- Add “value” without discounting your pricing. – Do they know what they’re getting from working with you?
- Ask questions and then follow through beyond their expectations!
3. Be focused on what’s right in front of you.
- Being present and “in the moment” – this is how you analyze instead of compare. This is how you grow.
- Focusing on the next step – IG is failing at this massively right now. Instead of thinking about their customer’s journey, they are focused on chasing after the ambitions of other companies in order to stay relevant.
- Stay away from “Shiny Object Syndrome” – don’t chase fads or things that will distract you from what you’re doing.
4. Be in the business of change.
- Use your platform for YOUR message.
- Use your platform to spark positivity and encouragement.
- Use your platform to grow yourself and learn through critical feedback.
5. Stay humble.
- Know when to ask for help. Learn to delegate, and to know your own limitations.
- Don’t talk about your wealth and position. This is not humility and it IS a turn off (in case you didn’t know).
- Give back when you can. This might look like you taking 15 minutes to help someone problem solve, inviting someone who is overwhelmed out to coffee, or donating a portion of your proceeds to a charity.
Concluding Thoughts
Keeping your ego in its rightful place is an individual responsibility. It will make or break the type of marketing and content you put forth. It will impact your brand. At the end of the day, ask yourself this: what kind of legacy do you want to leave?
